WHAT IS PILATES

Should you choose a matwork or apparatus class?

There are two types of Pilates classes to choose from. Apparatus or Matwork classes. Both are excellent forms of exercise, and you should choose the one that best suits your needs.

Both Apparatus and Matwork classes are available at all levels. Beginners, Improvers, Intermediate and Advanced. You can also find specialised classes such as 'Pre- and Post-Natal Pilates', or 'Pilates for Bad Backs', so always check out the range of Pilates classes available, and choose your class with care.

Matwork classes

  • Matwork class sizes vary but, a maximum of 12 clients per group is ideal.
  • Matwork classes may also be taught on a 1:1 basis.
  • In Matwork classes, exercises are mostly performed lying down on the mat, sometimes using small pieces of equipment.
  • It's your body working against gravity that provides the biggest challenge.
  • As there is no large Apparatus in Matwork classes, there is less support available, so in some ways Matwork classes can be more challenging.
  • For certain medical conditions, Apparatus classes may be more suitable. Your Pilates teacher will be happy to advise.
  • If you have an injury or medical condition, notify your teacher who can modify a particular exercise to make it more suitable for you. You must also let your teacher know if you are pregnant or have recently had a baby.
  • Matwork classes are more widely available than Apparatus classes, as they don't require a dedicated space in which to teach them. They're usually taught in local halls, dance, fitness or health centres.
  • A Matwork class usually lasts between 60-90 minutes.

Apparatus classes

  • In Apparatus classes, you're taught on large, specialised pieces of equipment, with names such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Ladder Barrel or Wunda Chair.
  • In Apparatus classes, a higher level of individual attention is usually given. Classes are taught either one-to-one or in small groups with an average 3-6 clients.
  • The Apparatus is used to provide resistance to challenge your body and also to provide support for your body, as required.
  • Your teacher can modify both the Apparatus and the exercises given, to suit your individual needs.
  • Classes are usually taught in a dedicated Pilates venue or studio to accommodate the large Apparatus required.
  • On your first visit, you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. The teacher will then carry out a postural assessment and tailor a programme specifically for you.
  • Your class will continue to be tailored to your needs, as you progress.
  • An Apparatus class usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
  • Classes tend to be more expensive than group Matwork classes to reflect the greater individual attention provided.
